This is my take on the art genre, Trompe l'oeil, where the artist paints in such realism as to “trick the eye” and convincingly render 3 dimensions in 2. Everything is painted in oil, even the shadows from the frame. In fact, the framed image shown is an unedited flat scan. I also wanted to play with entomological displays and me being me, I had to add a little magic and merged the cicada with a cut emerald.
